Hitchin Hurricanes/Hornets 2 Welwyn Clarets/Sky 0
Royston Crow League, 21st February 2009

Who would be a football manager?? Just when the weather takes a turn for the better you’re dealt another blow that even Premier League managers do not have to contend with …….. Half Term!!

With only 9 players available the decision was made to play one extended game.

The Hornicanes or was it the Hurrinets … let’s just call them Hitchin started like the weather – brightly.  Joel was lively and probing down the right wing and won a handful of early corners which he delivered himself to great effect, unfortunately they just eluded the Hitchin strikers.

The early pressure was not rewarded and Welwyn slowly got back into the game. Max and Jonathan were once again solid at the back and when they were breached Sam Hen expertly turned Welwyn’s best effort onto the post and then smartly gathered the ensuing rebound.

Will was replaced in the midfield by Ryan but the change could not break the deadlock and the half finished with honours well and truly even at 0-0.

1st Half Team: Sam Hen (gk), Jonathan, Max, Kane, Will, Joel & Sam Hart – subs Oliver & Ryan

The second half saw Welwyn introduce a fresh set of seven players, however Hitchin proved to be stronger with substitutes used in rotation.

Kane replaced Sam in goal and was a virtual spectator for 20 minutes with ‘Mr Reliable’ Max, ably assisted by Sam Hen, repelling all Welwyn could throw at them.

Olly, Ryan, Will and Joel worked hard in the midfield but after a short breather it was Jonathan who turned the game for Hitchin.

After winning the ball and breaking forward, Jonathan split the Welwyn defence with a slide-rule pass which sent Sam Hart clean through on goal; Sam’s shot wriggled under the Welwyn ‘keeper but like all natural goal scorers he had continued his run and was able to tap the ball into the empty net.

Sam Henthen broke from defence and his blocked shot fell for Jonathan to drive a right foot shot into the net and get the just reward his endeavour deserved.

The game finished 2-0 to Hitchin and although not a classic the boys proved that after a couple of weeks break they have not lost their resilience.
