SUPER SAM SAVES THE DAY
The Hornets grabbed a draw in an entertaining game at sunny Ickleford, most notable for a superlative display in goal from Sam Hen, which drew compliments from team-mates, supporters and even the opposition coach.
Both goals came in an even first half, with both teams creating chances to open the scoring. Welwyn took the lead when their girl defender showed the boys how it’s done with a fantastic weaving run straight through the Hitchin defence before she was upended in the area for a clear penalty. She took and scored the spot-kick, with a firm shot into the left-hand corner. Sam guessed right but could only palm the ball into the net.
Hitchin levelled just before half-time after a good passing move. William A picked up the ball in the centre circle and laid a pass into Vinay. Vinay spun, spotted a run from Alex and slipped in a great pass which Alex swept into the net for his first goal for the club – well done!
The second half was all about Sam as Welwyn began to dominate and look for a winner. He pulled off a string of fantastic close-range saves when the visitors looked certain to score and his all-round game is really improving, with confident handling and a good command of his area. Kai and Morgan combined really well in defence; both were alert and looked composed bringing the ball out of defence. Olly, Alex, Ben, Ryan and William A were busy and industrious in midfield and James and Vinay were tireless in holding the ball up and trying to create openings.
Overall, a spirited and resilient display under pressure from the Hornets and a hard-fought draw – well done, boys!
