Hitchin Hornets 0 Stevenage Tigers1
Royston Crow League, 31st January 2009

This was an outstanding win for the Hornets against a competitive Stevenage team. They dominated throughout and the score line could have been even more convincing. Somerset deservedly put Hitchin in front after latching on to a through-ball from Vinay. Somerset then limped off with an ankle injury to be replaced by James. James provided a crucial focal point to the attack and was well supported by Kai, Stephen and Vinay. Max and Jonathan were absolutely outstanding in defence, tackling, blocking and intercepting with great determination and endeavour. Despite a number of half-chances, the score remained 1-0 to the Hornets at half time. Somerset replaced Stephen at half time after the latter took a shot straight in the face from close-range.

The Hornets started the second half as they finished the first and were quickly into their stride. Max and Jonathan were, once again, excellent and this provided the springboard for Hitchin to go forward. A great pass by Kai sent Somerset racing into the box and he was brought down for a clear penalty. Somerset recovered to take the kick and cheekily chipped it in off the bar for his, and the Hornets’ second. He was inches away from completing a hat trick soon after, clipping the outside of the post with a curling shot. It was 3-0 soon after – another Somerset shot was blocked but Sam Hen anticipated well to knock in the rebound. It capped a fabulous performance from the team. Any away win is good – to go to Stevenage and win so convincingly is hugely impressive and the boys deserve lots of credit for their display.

Team: Sam Hen, Max, Jonathan, Stephen, Kai, Somerset, Vinay
