Hitchin Hurricanes 0 Stevenage Thunder 8
Royston Crow League, 6 September 2008

The Royston Crow fixture computer handed the Hurricanes the toughest imaginable start and so it proved as they were well beaten by an outstanding Stevenage Thunder side.

As always, the team gave it their all but were unable to cope with the pace, strength, passing and movement of a side that included a number of Arsenal academy youngsters. They held their opponents at bay for the opening five minutes but after conceding a free-kick just outside the area, Kane the keeper watched helplessly as an unstoppable shot cannoned off the crossbar and down into the net.

The Hurricanes continued to battle hard but the slightest mistake was pounced upon by Thunder and their finishing was ruthless. By half time, it was 5-0. The second half saw Hitchin pressing for a consolation goal but this left them exposed on the break and a further three goals were added.

Overall, it was a comprehensive defeat but the boys should take heart from the way they kept fighting to the end. It is no disgrace to lose to such a good team, probably the standout side in the division. Kane and William made some outstanding saves to keep the score down. Max and Patrick had a torrid time in defence but will have learnt a great deal about marking and closing down space. William and new-boy Ryan worked their socks off in midfield and Sam had a number of half-chances but was quickly closed down by good covering from the excellent Thunder defence. Joel was Hitchin’s man-of-the-match – he made some great runs and showed good skill under pressure.

An opening day defeat but no one should feel downhearted. Onwards and upwards to another home game with Bishop’s Stortford on the 13th.
