Hitchin Hurricanes 1 Stevenage Borough Storm 1
Royston Crow League A, 23rd January 2011

The Hurricanes bounced back from a sluggish start to claim a deserved point against an impressive Storm team at a freezing Ickleford.

Storm were a much-improved outfit since we played them in November and dominated the opening period as Hitchin struggled to gain a foothold in the match. They deservedly led when an unfortunate deflection in the penalty area presented them with a tap-in but they were unfortunate not to be 2-0 up when a shot hit the right-hand post and rolled across the line into the grateful arms of Sam. Hitchin came back into the game as the half progressed and were level just before the break after a wonderful individual goal from Somerset. He picked the ball up with his back to goal, to the left of the penalty area, twisted and turned past two defenders with excellent close control and finished clinically past the keeper.

The second half was a close-run affair and the result could have gone either way. Hitchin just edged possession but Storm were always dangerous on the break. Joel sent a trademark free-kick just over the bar, Kane was inches away from scoring the winner after two late runs into the box and Joel’s last-minute run and shot was well parried away by the Storm keeper.

All in all, another excellent, open game in what has been a very close and competitive division this season. The two teams meet again next Sunday at Ickleford in the League Cup.

Man of the match: - Sam was once again excellent in goal and Max was a rock in defence. However, my MoM is Somerset – he held the ball up well, hounded defenders and competed hard to win back possession and scored a wonderful equaliser – well done!
