Hitchin Hornets 4 Stevenage Stars 2
Royston Crow League, 27th February 2010

The Hornets claimed a deserved victory over Stevenage Stars after an open and entertaining game at Ickleford.

The Hornets started the game brightly and dominated the opening period. Vinay, Morgan and Ryan all went close before a looping volley from Ryan flicked off the head of a Stevenage defender and flew over the keeper to make it 1-0 to Hitchin (the dubious goals panel deemed this to be an own-goal). Stevenage struck back, taking advantage of some hesitant defending to make it 1-1 and had the chance to lead at the break when given a penalty after a foul in the box. The spot-kick was heading into the right-hand corner but Sam guessed right and got a fingertip touch to turn the ball onto the post and it was cleared.

Hitchin started the second half on top and went ahead again when Ryan followed up a rebound to tap-in and make it 2-1. It looked all over when Alex controlled the ball just outside the area and drilled a great shot just inside the right-hand post, giving the keeper no chance. Stevenage pulled a goal back to make it a nervous last few minutes before Alex scored a virtual carbon copy of his first goal to make it 4-2 – this time is was game over!

Sam Hart proved once again what an able keeper he is with a very confident performance – crowned by a super penalty stop. Jonathan had an excellent game in defence, well supported by Kai and Benjamin, and Morgan was, once again, a very good shield in midfield. Alex and Ryan provided strong running and trickery down the flanks, either side of Vinay and William who led the attack very well.

Man of the match: - Jonathan – tenacious tackling and alert covering – he had an excellent game in defence.
