The Hurricanes lost their 100% record but remain joint-top of the league after a tight, tense game against a strong and direct St Neots team.
The first half was played at a fast pace, with both teams closing down space and cancelling each other out. Hitchin’s quick passing game created a handful of half-chances for Somerset and Joel and St Neots’ long-ball style put pressure on Sam and the defence but, overall, defences were on top. The deadlock was broken five minutes before the break when Hitchin failed to properly clear a corner and from the resulting penalty box scramble, St Neots drove the ball past Sam.
The early part of the second half followed a similar pattern before Hitchin stepped up the pace and deservedly drew level. Joel found himself penned in on the right wing but cleverly twisted past his markers and into space. He shaped to shoot but unselfishly spotted Will unmarked at the far-post. Will’s excellent first-touch created space and he gave the keeper no chance with a clinical finish into bottom right corner of the net.
Hitchin were transformed by the goal and completely dominated the rest of the game as they went in search of the winner. How they didn’t score is a mystery as wave after wave of attack pinned St Neots in their own half. Joel went closest when he crashed a shot against the crossbar but the breakthrough would not come and the boys had to settle for a well-deserved point.
Sam was again a vocal and confident presence in goal and his handling, particularly of the high ball, was particularly impressive. Patrick and Max were resolute in defence and limited the visitor’s opportunities. Will and Kane dominated the midfield, particularly in the second half and Somerset competed very well in a tough, physical contest against two giant defenders.
Man of the match: - Joel – he led the Hitchin comeback and had a superb second half, causing mayhem on the right wing with his pace and skill.
Team – Sam Hart (GK), Max, Patrick, KAne, William S, Joel and Somerset
