Hitchin Hurricanes 5 St Neots Sky 1
Royston Crow League A, 20th March 2011

A superb second-half performance saw the Hurricanes claim a convincing win over a strong and direct St Neots team.

The boys picked up where they’d left off against Shephall in the cup and made a very fast start. They were first to every loose ball and harried the opposition, dominating the early part of the match. They deservedly led when Somerset collected the ball just outside the St Neots area and showed some nimble footwork to create space before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the back of the net. Hitchin looked likely to extend their lead until they sustained a leg injury to their key defender, Max that forced him reluctantly to come off. With no named subs, the boys had to carry on a man down, with Kane dropping back to assist Patrick. In this disrupted period before half-time, they conceded an equaliser, making it level at the break.

A man down, at that stage, a battling draw looked like the best result we could hope for. Fortunately the boys disagreed and produced one of the finest halves of football in their four years together, made even more impressive by their depleted numbers. With Sam, Patrick and Kane dealing comfortably with the home attacks and pushing the team forward and Will having his best game of the season in centre midfield, Joel and Somerset simply tore the home defence to shreds with excellent movement, interplay and devastating finishing. Joel made it 2-1, with a great interception, run and scorching shot that raced into the top left corner of the net like a tracer bullet. He then sent Somerset clear and an emphatic finish made it 3-1. Soon after, a brilliant counter-attack from Will and Joel was clinically finished by Somerset for a deserved hat-trick. The scoring was rounded off as Somerset turned provider and played Joel in, he skipped past his marker and finished superbly with a shot across the keeper.

An absolutely magnificent performance from everyone involved. By the high standards set last season and in the early part of this one, the Hurricanes have been somewhat under par since the enforced winter break but they have bounced back in style in the last two games. If they can summon up “The Spirit of St Neots” for the remainder of the season, anything is possible – well done to all!

Man of the match: - Heroes all over the pitch, but the joint MoMs are Joel and Somerset – superb in the first half, just unstoppable in the second.

Team: - Sam Hart, Patrick, Max, William, Kane, Joel, Somerset
