Hitchin Hornets 6 St Neots B 1
Royston Crow League, 24th October 2009

The free-scoring Hornets bounced back from their County Cup exit and made it 16 goals in 3 league games with a thumping win over St Neots at Ickleford.

The match was over as a contest by half-time as the Hornets raced into a 6 – goal lead. They showed good teamwork and passing, were first to every loose ball, looked to attack at every opportunity and punished every defensive lapse from their opponents.

Somerset scored the first after 2 minutes, poking home a cross from close-range. Ryan made it two with a thumping shot from the edge of the area. Goal 3 was the goal of the game. From a Hornets corner, a smooth interchange of passes between Ryan and Vinay saw the ball rolled across the pitch to James, on a foray from defence. He picked his spot and calmly side footed a firm shot into the right-hand corner. A minute later, Somerset raced away from his marker to score his second and Ryan soon added his second, and Hitchin’s fifth, after dispossessing a defender inside the area. Kai scored his first goal of the season to make it 6-0, just before the break, when his cross-shot flew past the keeper.

The second half was quieter and much more even as St Neots showed more attacking intent and scored a consolation goal after Hitchin failed to clear. The Hornets continued to create half-chances and Alex and Kai both went close to adding to the score.

Overall, this was another excellent performance and win for the Hornets. Jonathan and James combined very well together in defence to limit St Neots’ opportunities. Ryan, Alex and Kai were full of running and endeavour in midfield and Somerset and Vinay posed St Neots all sorts of problems with their skill and movement.

Man of the match – Ryan – dynamic running, good passing and two goals – he can argue with Kai about whether he should have had a hat-trick!

Squad – Sam Hen, Kane, Alex, James, Jonathan, Ryan, Kai, Vinay, Somerset
