The score line was harsh on the Hornets but an impressive St Neots deserved their win. They played a stronger team for this game, showed great fluency in their passing and movement and went 2-0 up early on. Kane pulled a goal back, with a crisp shot from the edge of the area and it looked “game on” at this stage. But 3 goals before half-time – the pick of which was number 4, a bullet header from a right-wing cross – put St Neots 5-1 up and in total command.
The Hornets tightened up defensively in the second half. The attacking trio of Joel, Somerset and Ryan enjoyed more possession and created a number of chances to reduce the deficit. To their credit, St Neots defended impressively and hustled and harried Hitchin, denying the boys time on the ball. They rounded off the scoring with a breakaway goal to seal an emphatic win. The Hornets competed well in difficult conditions and kept attacking until the final whistle – on the day, however, St Neots just took their chances well.
