Hitchin Hurricanes 5 Shephall 0
Royston Crow League Cup, 6th March 2011

An overdue and welcome return to winning ways for the Hurricanes as the boys overcame a spirited and committed Shephall team at a freezing St Nicholas Park in Stevenage.

The boys got off to a dream start as Joel picked up on a loose ball, raced into the Shephall box and slotted it past the keeper to make it 1-0 in the first minute. Far too often this season, the Hurricanes have conceded first and always seem to be chasing games. Today’s fast start seemed to settle them down and they played some lovely one and two touch football to put the home defence under pressure. Somerset took a short pass from Will turned and shot past the keeper for 2-0 and Kane made it 3-0 just before the break, dribbling past a defender and finishing with a strong left-foot shot across the keeper.

The second half was an open game, with two more goals for the Hurricanes. Ben R scored his first goal for the club, with an unstoppable right-foot finish after good work from Somerset and Kane. Joel then completed the scoring – after his snapshot crashed against the bar and rebounded out, he showed great composure to control the ball, skip around the keeper and coolly beat the man on the line with a well-placed finish.

Overall, it was a very enjoyable match played in a good spirit by both teams. Shephall had won 6 in a row before this game and it showed, they played with confidence and commitment and Sam, Max and Patrick had to be at their solid and alert best to keep a clean sheet. Thanks to the team and their friendly supporters and good luck for the remainder of the season.
