The Hornets grabbed their first win of the season with an emphatic win over Sawbridgeworth. It was easily their best performance of the season and some of the passing and link-up play was very impressive and but for the woodwork and some good Sawbo defending, the final score could have reached double-figures.
The Hornets had a dream start with Ryan racing through to score after EIGHT seconds….easily the fastest goal in the team’s history. Two minutes later, it was 2-0 as a clever pass from Somerset set up Alex for his second goal in two games. Somerset nearly made it 3-0 straightaway but his shot crashed against the post and bounced away to safety. William A did make it 3-0 just before half-time, racing clear with Alex and calmly finishing for his first goal for the team – well done!
Although the game was won, the Hornets showed no complacency and attacked relentlessly throughout the second half. Great work from Somerset on the right wing led to an inviting cross which Alex tapped in at the far-post for his second of the game. A poor goal-kick from the Sawbo keeper was pounced upon by Jonathan and a very cool finish made it 5-0. Somerset rounded off the scoring at 6-0 with a well-directed near-post volley from an accurate Ryan corner.
Overall, it was a hugely impressive team performance. Sam Hen had a relatively quiet week after his previous heroics but was alert to any danger. Kai and Olly were very calm and resolute in defence – it was the first clean sheet of the season for either of our teams.
Man of the match – one goal, two assists and numerous near-misses – Somerset
