The Hurricanes made it three wins from three, producing their best performance of the season to deservedly trounce Sawbridgeworth at “Fortress” Ickleford.
Apart from a flat start to the second half, the boys dominated from start to finish and, but for some resolute defending and excellent goalkeeping from Sawbo, could have run up a cricket score. Hitchin showed fantastic determination and unselfish teamwork throughout the team and some of the one-touch passing and movement, particularly in the second half, was an absolute joy to watch.
The Hurricanes poured forward from the first whistle and went close to breaking the deadlock a number of times before Joel latched onto an excellent pass from Sam K to thump a right-foot shot past the keeper. Sam K made it 2-0 before half-time with a tap-in after a great run and pass by Will S on the left-wing.
The Hurricanes seemed subdued at the start of the second half but, after conceding a freak goal, they sprang into life with 15 minutes of fantastic football as they ran rings around a bewildered defence. A wonderful team goal made it 3-1. Patrick won the ball in defence and passed to Morgan. He slipped the ball down the right-wing for Sam K. He jinked past two players and unselfishly rolled a pass into Sam Hart, who finished emphatically. Sam Hart returned the compliment two minutes later, feeding Sam K to make it 4-1. Sam K then completed his hat-trick to make it 5-1, knocking in a rebound after a stinging drive from Joel was parried by the Sawbo keeper. Sam Hart supplied William S, who made it 6-1 with a well-timed run and clinical finish. Sam Hart then finished the scoring, rolling the ball past the keeper after more good set-up play from Sam K.
Allied to this superb attacking display was very resolute and determined defending. Max and Patrick were alert in defence and made countless interceptions and tackles and Kane and Morgan switched effortlessly between defence and midfield. All in all, a marvellous team performance, which sets us up nicely for the local derby away to Letchworth on October 10.
Man of the match – a very tricky decision with many stand-out displays – but, for a performance bursting with energy and endeavour, two goals and two assists, my choice is Sam Hart. Squad – Sam Hen, Patrick, Max, Kane, William, Morgan, Joel, Sam Hart, Sam K
