An irresistible second-half display of attacking football saw the Hurricanes record their best win of the season after an uneven game. . . . scrappy first half, brilliant second.
As we left Hitchin, it looked like we might be adding fog to the snow, ice and rain that have scuppered matches this winter. However, it had cleared by the time we reached Sawbo and the teams lined up on a heavy pitch with Sam Hart deputising in goal for the absent Sam Hen.
Kicking uphill, the Hurricanes had the lion’s share of possession but struggled to create chances for the first 10 minutes – both teams struggled to settle and it was a scrappy affair. Against the run of play, Sawbo took a shock lead but Hitchin quickly hit back with a great left-wing run and fine finish from Sam K. Two minutes, Hitchin were in front as a Joel shot rebounded off the post and Somerset snaffled the rebound to make it 2-1. Just before half-time, Sawbo levelled once again, as their striker ghosted into the area unmarked.
With the benefit of the slope, the second-half was one-way traffic as Hitchin totally dominated. Sam K volleyed home a Joel corner to make it 3-2 and returned the compliment to set up Joel for Hitchin’s fourth. Joel completed a quickfire hat-trick with a long-range shot and then a cool finish after evading two tackles. He added his fourth to make it 7-2 with a speculative shot that completely deceived the Sawbo keeper. Sam K took Kane’s pass to complete his hat-trick and then made it 9-2 on the stroke of time, with an unstoppable shot from outside the area.
Sam Hart was an able deputy in goal, was very safe when called upon and was vocal in organising his defence. Patrick recovered from a tentative start to make some good challenges and blocks and Will and Kane swapped roles to shield the defence and support the attack. The front three were outstanding. Somerset was a key target man and focal point and either side of him, Sam K and Joel were in devastating form.
Man of the match:- I couldn’t choose between them so Sam K and Joel share the award. They have now scored 37 goals between them in 10 games and if they can keep this going, anything is possible for the Hurricanes this season.
Team – Sam Hart, Patrick, William, Kane, Joel, Sam K, Somerset.
