Hitchin Hurricanes 1 Royston Diamonds 1
Royston Crow League A, 21st November 2010

The Hurricanes maintained their unbeaten start to the season but couldn’t quite find the winner their dominance deserved and settled for a point at a freezing Heath Sports Centre.

The boys started with real purpose and played some lovely pass-and-move football, dominating possession and territory from the start and forcing corner after corner. Midway through the first half and against the run of play, Royston scored when a corner floated right across the Hurricanes’ box and was turned in at the far post. The Hurricanes resumed their dominance and deservedly drew level just before half-time when Somerset had a shot from the edge of the area blocked by the keeper but was alert enough to follow up and force the rebound over the line. He then nearly made it 2 in two minutes, racing onto a through ball and slipping the ball past the keeper but also just past the post.

The second half began in a similar vein with the Hurricanes making all the running. Ben replaced Kane in midfield but the team was forced into a further reshuffle early in the second half as Max was carried off with a nasty-looking ankle/foot injury and Kane returned to partner Patrick in defence. From then on, it was one-way traffic but while Joel, Will and Somerset all went close, the winner just would not come.

Overall, it was another terrific away performance from the boys, full of very positive football. Sam had a quieter game in goal than in recent weeks but was solid and secure whenever called upon. Max and Patrick were diligent and efficient in defence and Kane and Will completely dominated the midfield. Joel and Somerset proved a handful for the Royston back-line and Ben quickly adjusted to the pace of the game and played his part in the second-half onslaught.

Man of the match: - Will – tireless and committed in centre midfield – an all-action display.
