The Hurricanes came crashing down to earth after last week’s cup win with a heavy defeat at Royston.
Despite having the benefit of the slope in the first half, the boys really struggled to get going. Royston were tall, physical and skilful and did to Hitchin what Hitchin have been doing to most teams since Christmas – harrying the man on the ball and breaking quickly. The 4-0 half-time scoreline did not flatter the home side.
Max, Sam and Joel came on for the second half and the Hurricanes briefly threatened the comeback of the season as they narrowed the deficit to 4-3 within 5 minutes of the re-start - Sam and Joel (2) got the goals. The momentum was with Hitchin at this point and Royston were stunned. Sam had a glorious chance to complete his hat-trick and equalise – he raced away from the defence but his shot flashed past the post, maybe a foot wide.
Royston gradually came back into the game and made certain of the victory with 2 late goals and the Hurricanes tired. Nevertheless, a 3-2 second half “win” and a very good comeback.
