In a tournament sadly shortened by withdrawals, the Hurricanes breezed into the end-of-season Royston Crow League Cup finals with two convincing wins on a glorious Saturday morning at Ickleford.
Kicking off against Stevenage-based Albion Youth, the boys quickly seized control of the game and the first half was played almost exclusively in the visitors half. Somerset made it 1-0, pouncing on a rebound after a Joel snapshot was blocked. A minute later, it was 2-0 – Somerset again beat four Albion players in a mazy run before finishing confidently. Kane and two from Sam K completed the five goal first half blitz and enabled Pete and Paddy to shuffle the squad to ensure everyone got game-time. The second half was similarly one-sided but credit to Albion for keeping going and their defence and keeper performed heroically. The only addition to the scoreline was a sharp finish from Vinay, who reacted quickly to a loose ball to turn it home.
The Hurricanes made another blistering start to their second game against Letchworth Eagles Orange. Sam K made it 1-0, chasing a long clearance from Patrick to beat the keeper and then made it 2-0 with a wonderful looping left-foot finish. Joel made it 3-0 direct from a corner and Kane and Somerset added two more to make it another 5-0 scoreline at half-time. With the game in the bag, Pete and Paddy experimented with players and formation which gave us to the unusual sight of deadly strike duo Joel and Sam K as the last line of defence! Ryan made it 6-0 with a strong finish and Joel completed the scoring with a long-range shot that looped over the keeper’s head. 2 games, 13 goals, 0 conceded – job done, into the finals, where we were joined by Letchworth Orange who beat Albion 3-0 in the final match. From the other group, Letchworth Blacks and Stevenage Stars progressed by a walkover after the other 3 teams dropped out.
The finals day is on Saturday 22 May.
