Hitchin Hornets 1 Stevenage Lightning 6
Royston Crow League, 6 September 2008

Kane Stanton opened the Hornets account with a close-range header but it proved a consolation goal against another excellent Stevenage side.

The score line doesn’t do the team justice. With three boys (Oliver, Samuel and Ryan) making their debut, they played with great spirit and energy and finished the game very strongly.

The team took time to settle in the first half and against very good opponents, the slightest mistake was punished with a goal - it was 5-0 at half time. The second-half was a different game. Kane moved into midfield, Ryan took the gloves and the team responded strongly. The introduction of Joel saw a number of chances created before Kane’s well-deserved consolation.

Man-of-the-match was Jonathan. He played with great determination and strong running and really took the game to Lightning. Ryan had a very promising debut in goal. He made some good stops and his long goal kicks created real pressure in the second half. Kai and Stephen settled quickly and made some excellent tackles and interceptions in defence. Debutants Oliver and Samuel were busy and competitive in midfield and Vinay led the forward line with great energy, especially in the first half.

The spirit and endeavour displayed by the Hornets will undoubtedly bring greater rewards against less-gifted opponents than Stevenage Lightning.
