Another impressive win for the Hurricanes, as they resisted a brave second-half fight back from Letchworth to secure victory in the closing minutes of an entertaining game.
The Hurricanes started the way they’d finished against Baldock in their last home game and completely dominated the first half. They forced corner after corner in the first five minutes and deservedly went ahead through Will. He was sent clear after good combination work from Joel and Sam and although his first touch took him wide of the goal, he didn’t panic. He calmly stopped, stepped inside past a defender and drilled a low shot into the net. Hitchin continued to dominate and went 2 up when a corner was cleared out of the penalty area. Patrick raced from defence and his first-time shot went over the keeper’s head and in off the underside of the crossbar. He looked as stunned as everyone else and definitely needs to work on a suitable celebration – but was eventually delighted with his first goal of the season!
After a superb first-half display, the Hurricanes were a little sluggish after the break and Letchworth got back into the game. The Eagles dominated territory and possession and deservedly pulled a goal back with a neat turn and finish midway through the half. Hitchin were under pressure at this point and the defence was stretched. However, Max and Patrick were solid, Kane produced some great covering tackles and Sam Hen made some terrific saves to keep the Eagles at bay.
Hitchin remained dangerous on the break and a lightning-fast move saw them go 3-1 up. Max cleared the ball into the centre-circle. Sam Hart gathered and ran for goal and shrugged off a defender before a great left-foot finish across the keeper from a tricky angle clinched victory.
