The Hornets fantastic winning run finally came to the end as they exited the Trophy at the last-eight stage against an in-form Letchworth team.
The visitors began strongly, passing the ball with great fluency and confidence but Hitchin gradually started to even things up. Letchworth then took the lead when a long-range shot was pushed onto the post by Oliver but bounced down just over the line. The game was fast-paced and high-quality and the Hornets were more than a match for the visitors but conceded an unfortunate second just before the break when a corner ran across the goal-line and was diverted in for an own-goal.
It looked game over when Letchworth made it 3-0 just after the break but Hitchin refused to give up and when a surging run from Ollie was halted by a foul in the box, Ryan stepped up to drill a powerful penalty into the net to make it 3-1. At this stage, a comeback looked on and Hitchin came close to making it 3-2 when Ryan’s goal-bound shot was cleared off the line. However, Letchworth made it 4-1 with a good finish and then rounded off the scoring with two late goals.
The final score was a little harsh on the home side but Letchworth were undoubtedly the better side on the day and good luck to them in the semi-final.
Man of the match: - Jonathan – he was in the wars today and needed treatment at least three times but grittily stayed on and was his usual busy, tenacious self.
