Hitchin Hornets 5 Letchworth Blues 0
Royston Crow League B, 13th February 2011

The Hornets produced a quite brilliant display of attacking football to deservedly beat the Blues and record their best victory of the season to make it three wins in a row. From first whistle to last, every single player was on tip-top form and it was a joy to watch them play with such confidence, skill and determination.

It was an open, entertaining game from the start and credit to both teams for playing with very positive intent. Hitchin went ahead when Alex was played in by an astute pass from William, raced into the box and thumped a left-foot finish past the helpless Blues keeper.  Alex then turned supplier, sending Ollie clear - he was first to the through ball and shot under the keeper to make it 2-0. Ollie made a great run and cross to set up William and his curled shot hit the right corner of the net for 3-0.

The second half followed a similar pattern as both teams attacked but Hitchin’s improved passing and movement and superb finishing gave them the edge. Alex set up the fourth, chasing a through ball and challenging the keeper and defender. The ball spilled and ran towards the line – Ollie was alert to the opportunity and scored to make it 4-0. The performance was capped by the goal of the game to make it 5-0. Vinay picked the ball up in the centre circle, twisted into space and sent a curling 20 yard shot in off the angle of post and bar and nestling into the back of the net.

The boys came off the pitch to a deserved ovation – it was a fabulous performance. The teams’ determination not to concede and keep a third successive clean sheet was very impressive – Oliver, Jonathan and James formed a magnificent back-three and set up the platform for a brilliant attacking performance. It would not have flattered the team if the score line had reached double-figures – they were that good!

Man of the match: - Hardest decision of the season but my MoM is Alex who led the line very well, set up two goals and scored one.

Team: - Oliver W, James, Jonathan, Sam Hen, William A, Ollie G, Alex, Ryan, Vinay
