A spirited second half comeback from the Hornets was not enough to retrieve the game against a strong Letchworth team. The final score was harsh on the boys – but for the woodwork and an outstanding display from the Eagles keeper, the winning margin could have been much tighter.
The visitors started off strongly and dominated the first ten minutes, taking advantage of uncertain defending from set-pieces to race into a 3-0 lead. The Hornets rallied towards the end of the first half and William A and Vinay went close to reducing the deficit. To their credit, they came back strongly after the break and a three-pronged attack of Ryan, Morgan and Vinay put Letchworth under real pressure. Despite conceding two more goals, the boys kept on going and deservedly made it 5-1 when a Vinay snapshot was parried by the keeper and Morgan made it 2 goals in 2 games by netting the rebound. Soon after, Morgan nearly had a second went a shot struck a post. Ryan and Vinay both had good opportunities but they were up against a keeper in inspired form.
On paper, a comprehensive defeat but in reality it was a much closer game and the spirit and strength they showed in the second half was very admirable.
Man of the match: - Morgan was, like last week, the stand-out player. Strong, full of running, took his goal well - on another day, could have had a hat-trick.
Squad – Ryan, Kai, Alex, James, Olly, Jonathan, Morgan, Benjamin, Vinay, William A.
