The Hornets suffered only their second defeat of 2009, going down to a rather harsh 4-1 defeat against a strong Letchworth team.
The game was even in terms of possession and territory but some defensive mishaps gave the Eagles chances and they took advantage. They went ahead after 7 minutes when two strikers broke clear of the Hitchin defence. A cross was well blocked by Ryan but the ball looped into the air and was volleyed into the net. Hitchin were soon 2-0 down when a corner was cleared to the edge of the box and the subsequent shot took a huge deflection which gave keeper Kane no chance.
The Hornets were unfazed by the score line and began the second half with great energy. Kai, Vinay, James and Sam Henshaw all went close to reducing the deficit. All this pressure left gaps at the back and Letchworth broke clear against the run of play to make it 3-0. Substitute Joel pulled a goal back after a great run down the right wing. At this point, another goal would have put the Eagles under real pressure but they broke again to make it 4-1, a very good individual goal as the Eagles striker turned Jonathan on the touchline before beating Kane at his near-post.
