A pre-Christmas cracker of a game saw the Hornets stage a dramatic late comeback to claw back a two-goal deficit and claim a deserved draw against a talented Letchworth team.
The first five minutes were a tight affair with the teams sizing each other up. Goalkeeper Kane commanded his area well and raced out to make a number of brave stops at the feet of Letchworth forwards. Letchworth had the first chance to score when Patrick’s late challenge was penalised but the resulting spot-kick was dragged wide of the right-hand post. It remained a very even game until Letchworth broke the deadlock just before half time after a left-wing run and cross was swept into the net.
The second-half followed a similar pattern until Letchworth broke away to score a second. At this point, the Hornets looked a beaten side but they rallied and began to dominate the game. They pulled a goal back from a corner – the ball broke loose and Ryan reacted sharply to blast the ball into the roof of the net.
The crowd sensed a comeback was on and the Hornets poured forward in search of an equaliser. Vinay’s drive was well saved by the Letchworth keeper and Jonathan shot just wide of the post. The equaliser finally arrived five minutes from the end. Ryan sent a through ball towards the Letchworth goal and Vinay showed great determination to out-pace two defenders and calmly place the ball past the keeper.
In a topsy-turvy last few minutes, both teams threw caution to the wind and either side could have won. A Ryan free kick went close while at the other end, Sam Hen made a great goalmouth block to thwart Letchworth. Overall, a draw was a fair result and both teams should be proud of the part they played in one of the most exciting games of the season. To bounce back from a two-goal deficit speaks volumes for the boys’ spirit and growing confidence.
