The Hornets led 3 times and came within a minute of their first away win of the season after a spectacular match at Pixmore.
The Hornets struck first when Somerset pounced after Vinay’s corner hit the post and nearly went 2-0 when a lovely, fluent move involving Vinay and William A saw Somerset hit the post. Letchworth equalised with a close-range shot and went 2-1 ahead but the Hornets came roaring back and William A made it 2 goals in 2 games, with a crisp finish from just inside the box.
The second-half was as breathless as the first with both teams throwing caution to the wind and attacking at every opportunity. Ryan made it 3-2 with a good run from the centre-circle and an unstoppable shot from the edge of the area. Letchworth equalised again to make it 3-3 but Alex arrived in the penalty area with an unerring finish to make it 4-3 with 90 seconds to go. Credit to Letchworth, they refused to be beaten and equalised again straight from the kick-off.
Both teams were applauded off after a riveting game and should be very proud of the vibrant, attacking football they played. The Hornets have come on leaps and bounds in the four games they have been together and played with great teamwork and spirit. Ryan and Somerset shared the gloves for a half each and still managed to bag a goal each. James was a revelation in an unfamiliar defensive role and Kai was very tenacious in defence – at one point, he stopped Letchworth attacking with about 5 tackles or blocks in about 30 seconds. Olly had a tremendous game in midfield and, with Ben, showed great stamina and spirit. Vinay set up two goals and was very unlucky not to score himself and William A and Alex are both developing a happy knack of scoring goals from midfield.
Man of the match – James – playing in an unfamiliar defensive role, he rose to the occasion and made some great tackles and interceptions and used the ball well when he had space and time.
Squad – Ryan, Somerset, Vinay, Olly, Ben, Kai, William A, Alex, James
