Letchworth Garden City Eagles U7 v Hitchin U7 - 5 April 2008

A depleted Hitchin squad produced one of their best performances of the season to draw and beat a strong Letchworth team in two entertaining matches at Pixmore.

The magnificent seven of Kane, Sam Henshaw, Patrick, Jonathan, Daniel, Sam Hartnack and Joel played with skill and commitment and thoroughly deserved to come out on top.

Match 1
After an even start, Hitchin took the lead with, arguably, their goal of the season so far. In a move straight from the training ground, Daniel, Joel and Sam Hartnack swept up field and a quick one-two sent Joel clear - his finish was excellent. Hitchin didn’t lead for long as Letchworth hit back with a well-taken equaliser after a good reverse pass split the Hitchin defence.  Letchworth almost took the lead when they scored but the referee pulled back play due to an injury to Jonathan. It was a very sporting gesture by the referee and Letchworth, much appreciated by the Hitchin contingent.

The remainder of the match was open and end-to-end with both teams attacking at every opportunity. Sam Henshaw and Patrick were strong and solid in defence and made some vital tackles and interceptions. Kane had an excellent game and made two brilliant saves during the second half. Jonathan and Daniel battled well in midfield and Sam Hartnack and Joel were dangerous in attack. Joel almost added his second in the last minute when Sam sent him clear on goal. His first shot was saved and the rebound beat the keeper but went just wide of the post.

Match 2
saw Sam Henshaw take the gloves and Kane move into attack. Sam and Joel played in defence with Patrick moved into midfield. The first half performance was a bit disjointed as the team adjusted to their new positions but Hitchin gradually started to take control of midfield and put pressure on the Letchworth defence. The game looked to be heading for a draw until some clever, quick thinking from Kane saw him spot the Letchworth keeper out of position and he scored with a shot from wide on the left touchline.  Hitchin kept the Eagles out for the last few minutes to secure a welcome and deserved away victory.
