Hitchin Hurricanes 1 Knebworth Yellows 0
Royston Crow League, 14th March 2009

On paper, this looks like a narrow win. In reality it was a one-sided game and only a superb display from the Knebworth keeper prevented a goal-feast for the Hurricanes.

Sam Hen had a quiet game in goal as some immaculate defending from Max and Patrick kept Knebworth at arms length. They both showed increasing composure and confidence on the ball and the whole team showed a commitment to possession, passing and movement. The front-four of Kane, Will, Sam and Joel kept Knebworth pinned back in the own half for long periods. Sam and Joel both sent shots whistling past the post. Just when it looked that Hitchin’s dominance was not going to be rewarded with goals, Will broke the deadlock with a superb individual effort. Max cleared a Knebworth corner. Will picked the ball up midway inside his own half and scampered forward, past a fragmented Knebworth defence. Kane made a great supporting run but Will went alone. He scampered into the penalty area, steadied himself and made no mistake with a cool right-foot finish.

Somerset and Ryan replaced Sam Hart and Joel after the break but the pattern of the game continued with Hitchin attacking from the start. Will nearly added a second when hitting the post after a run and pass from Somerset and Hitchin forced a succession of excellent saves from the keeper. 1-0 is always an uncomfortable scoreline to hold onto but the boys saw the game out to claim another impressive win.

Team: Sam Hen, Max, Patrick, Kane, William, Joel, Sam Hartnack subs: Somerset, Ryan.
