The Hurricanes started the season in scintillating form with an emphatic and deserved win at sunny Knebworth.
The team was quickly out of the blocks and spurned a number of half-chances before Joel took a pass from Somerset and a precision finish into the left-hand corner made it 1-0. The Hurricanes looked comfortable in defence and were playing some wonderful pass-and-move football - they deservedly extended their lead when a clever pass from Kane and a superb cross from Joel were rounded off with a first-time finish from Somerset. It was quickly 3-0 as Joel took a Somerset pass and scored from a cross-shot. With five minutes to go until half-time and in complete control, the boys stepped off the gas and lost their shape, allowing the hosts back into it. Knebworth looked more threatening and pulled a goal back when their winger clipped the ball over keeper Sam for their striker to roll it into an unguarded net.
Fortunately, the second half began as the first had started and Joel completed his hat-trick with a simple far-post finish after a cross from Will. Somerset made it 5-1 with a sharp turn and shot in off the post. Kane then made it 6-1 with the goal of the game – a barnstorming run down the left wing from inside his own half that was finished off with an unstoppable shot into the top corner. A mightily impressive second half performance was capped with goal number 7 as Somerset laid a ball off to Joel on the right and then raced into the box to meet Joel’s wonderful, floated cross with a firm header to complete his hat-trick.
A razor-sharp performance all-round. Sam Hartnack showed his invaluable versatility once again with a confident display in goal. Patrick was composed and commanding at the back and combined well with Alex to snuff out home attacks. The Kane-Will partnership dominated the midfield and Somerset and Joel forged a very promising partnership up front.
Man of the match – A tough one. Joel had a dazzling game on the right and Patrick had an impressive game in defence. But my MoM is Somerset – by adding mobility and speed to his heading prowess and ability to hold the ball up and bring others into the game, he looked like a complete centre-forward today.
Team – Sam Hart, Patrick, Alex, William, Kane, Joel, Somerset
