Hitchin Hornets 1 Hormead Hares B 1
Royston Crow League, 4th April 2009

A narrow, but deserved win for the boys – the margin could have been greater. The first half was an even affair with few chances. Hitchin’s defence was greatly improved with Max providing a useful shield with Patrick and William springing forward to launch attacks. Kai and Oliver made good runs on the wings in support of Somerset, who once again worked tirelessly leading the line.

After the break, Somerset took a deserved breather and Jonathan led the line with Sam Hen tucking into centre midfield and Max rejoining Patrick in defence. The changes had an instant impact as Jonathan raced through and finished in some style to put Hitchin in front. As luck would have it, I was walking behind the goal at the time and he finished superbly, expertly lifting the ball over the advancing keeper.

Hitchin comfortably held onto the advantage and, as the clock ticked down, Hormead threw players forward in search of an equaliser, leaving gaps at the back. Kai, Jonathan and Sam all had chances to add to Hitchin’s advantage but in the end 1-0 was enough. It was a win that leaves our recent record as only 1 defeat in 16 games stretching back to the end of November – a superb achievement!

Team: Ryan, Patrick, William, Max, Kai, Oliver, Somerset subs: Jonathan, Sam Hen
