An excellent performance and result from a depleted Hurricanes and a deserved draw against a competitive and skilful Hormead team. With five players already missing and Kane falling ill just before the game, the team re-organised well, led twice and played their part in a fast-moving game.
With top scorers Sam and Joel unavailable, Somerset led the line and had an outstanding game. He retained possession well, linked up well with Will, Jonathan and Ryan and was a constant threat to the Hormead defence. He put Hitchin in front after five minutes, following in a shot from Ryan and pouncing on the rebound to score when the keeper could only parry. Hormead equalised soon after when Hitchin failed to clear but William put Hitchin back in front just before the break with a firm shot after another rebound from Ryan.
Hormead started strongly after the break and were quickly on top. Hitchin’s defence stepped back a bit and Hormead took advantage with their skilful runners finding time and space. They equalised midway through the half with an excellent goal, a fluent passing movement that sliced through Hitchin’s defence. At this point it was anybody’s game but the defence tightened up to deny Hormead any more opportunities. Will came closest to breaking the deadlock, with a superb, mazy run from box-to-box that ended with him prodding the ball just wide of the right-hand post. All in all, it was a deserved draw, a gutsy display and, in the circumstances, an excellent result.
