LAST-GASP DEFEAT FOR HORNETS
The Hornets began the season with a very promising performance and were unfortunate to have a deserved draw snatched away in the closing moments to lose 3-2.
Hitchin had the better of a quiet first-half – goalkeeper Ryan was a virtual spectator as he was well-protected by the excellent Max and Olly. Jonathan, Alex and Kai were full of running down the wings and Vinay proved a handful for the Colts defence – it was his persistence that forced the own goal that gave Hitchin a half-time lead. He was also unlucky not to add a second after a superb free-kick that looked to be heading for the top corner before the Colts keeper clawed it away.
The second half was more even and fast-paced and the Colts were more threatening. They equalised just after the break with a far-post finish from a good cross. Hitchin continued to threaten and took the lead midway through the half with a superb Olly volley, looping the ball over the keeper’s head from the edge of the area. With 5 minutes to go, Stevenage levelled once more but the Hornets remained resolute and forced a succession of corners – very well taken by Olly – as they sought a winner. Against the run of play, the Colts broke with 20 seconds left and a low shot from the edge of the area was save by keeper Sam Hen but spun into the net. A very cruel finish but many, many positives. Great defending from Max and Olly. Kai, Jonathan, Alex and William A formed an energetic and competitive midfield and Vinay and James were a constant threat to the Stevenage backline
