Hitchin Hornets 1 Stevenage Colts 2
Royston Crow League, 27 September 2008

It was last-minute heartache for the Hornets as a late goal from the Colts snatched away a deserved point after an exciting game at Ickleford.  It was rough justice on Hitchin after they battled back well to claw their way back into the game after going a goal down.

The first-half was a tight, goalless game but the Hornets had the better of the possession. Patrick and Max played their best matches of the season in defence – they covered well to snuff out any danger and made some great tackles and interventions. The midfield of Stephen, Ollie, Jonathan competed strongly and James was a willing runner in attack – he held the ball up and used it to bring others into the attack and was extremely unfortunate that a snapshot from the edge of the area rolled just wide of the post – this was the nearest either team came to a goal.

The second half was just as tight until the Colts took the lead through a simple finish from a corner. Hitchin came back strongly and deservedly equalised through a close-range shot on the turn from Ollie – his first Hitchin goal. The game looked to be heading for a draw until 30 seconds from the end - the Hornets failed to clear the ball and a shot from the edge of the box zipped past Jonathan’s stretching dive.

A disappointing end to the game but the Hornets can take many positives from the game. The defence looked more solid lately and just needs to learn to clear their lines rather than letting the ball ricochet around the box. The front-four played with real endeavour and the whole team played with great spirit and energy.
