Hitchin Hornets 6 BSCFC 0
Royston Crow League, 13 September 2008

The Hornets made it a double celebration for Hitchin with a thumping 6-0 win. They completely overwhelmed Stortford in the first half and could have reached double figures if second half chances had been converted.

Joel continued his excellent start to the season with four well-taken goals in a super first half. His first goal was an unstoppable snapshot from the edge of the area that flew into the net. He raced clear of the Stortford defence to coolly slot home a second and completed his hat trick soon after with another clinical finish. His through pass sent Vinay racing clear and another well-taken goal put Hitchin 4-0 up. Kane made it five with a close-range finish after the Stortford keeper could only parry a Joel shot. Just before half time it was 6, with Joel crashing home another great shot.

James replaced Somerset for the second half and joined Vinay and Joel in a three-pronged attack. Quite how the team didn’t add to their total is a complete mystery. Chances were missed, woodwork was hit – at one stage, four Hitchin players raced clear with only the goalkeeper to beat and the ball went wide.

Credit to Bishops Stortford who came back strongly in the second-half. The Hitchin defence remained strong, however – Kai continued his solid start to the season and Patrick covered well as the deep-lying sweeper. Kane and Sam Hen were rarely troubled but dealt well with any attacks that did get through.

Overall, a good team effort and morale boosting win. Joel was outstanding and a clear man-of-the-match – his close-control, dribbling and passing improve with every game. Special mention for debutant Somerset – he played with great energy and purpose and was unfortunate not to score in the first half.

Congratulations Hornet on your first win of the season!
