With the Hurricanes not having a game, all the focus was on the Hornets who entertained a strong Boreham Wood side.
The first half saw the Hornets start brightly with some good passing football and justifiably take an early lead through Vinay. The Hornets were in control with James and Jonathan providing a strong shield in front of Ollie W in goal who when asked, provided a safe pair of hands claiming everything that came into the box. As the Hornets applied the pressure it looked as though there could only be one winner but how often do you see it in football - against the run of play a strong run and good finish saw Boreham Wood equalise. The Hornets continued to press with Sam and Ollie dominating the midfield and Ryan and Vinay working tirelessly up front always offering an outlet - but they couldn’t find the second goal their play deserved.
The second half was an edge-of- the-seat ride with both teams pushing to try and find the winning goal. Alex came on to play left midfield and was soon into the action with some strong tackling and driving runs. Moving out to the right wing Ollie G took control of the game and gave the Borehamwood left midfielder and left back a torrid time. Running at pace with close control, Ollie G proceeded to get around the back of the defence on numerous occasions but the Hornets just couldn’t get on the end of one of his crosses. Borehamwood also continued to push forward and only some last ditch tackles and good handling from Ollie W kept the game level. It looked as though one goal would win it and when Ollie G flew down the wing, looked up and picked out Ryan who finished with pin point accuracy the home fans thought it was all over. How wrong we were, with time running out Borehamwood scrambled an equaliser and we were all set for ten additional minutes.
The tension was unbelievable with a penalty shoot out looming. The first half of extra time was a tight affair with a few half chances, but after some good play through the midfield, Vinay broke into the right channel, drove into the box and his cross/shot was deflected into his own net by the Borehamwood goalkeeper. Although the last five minutes seemed an eternity the Hornets held strong and deservedly march into the next round full of confidence. Well done boys!
