The Hurricanes’ disappointing run of form in 2011 continued as they slipped to their 3rd defeat in 4 games away at high-flying Bishop Stortford.
The first half was a goalless but fast-moving encounter. The home team dominated territory and possession but Sam made some sharp saves to keep them out and the team covered and tackled very well. At the other end, chances were few and far between – Kane went closest for Hitchin when he headed a superb Joel corner just wide of the left-hand post.
Stortford took the lead seconds into the second half as their striker was not closed down and his shot from the edge of the area gave Sam no chance. It was 2-0 five minutes later – as Stortford broke down the left-side of the area, their shot was brilliantly saved by Sam but Stortford followed up from the rebound to double their lead.
The boys showed good spirit to finish the match strongly. Joel made it 2-1 with a lovely turn and crisp shot from just outside the area. Hitchin then had their best spell of the game and looked like they might claim a point – Somerset, William and Joel all had half-chances but couldn’t quite claim the equaliser. Stortford then scored on the break to clinch a deserved victory in the last minute – they were given too much space in the box and a turn and shot made it 3-1.
Man of the match: - Joel – great endeavour throughout and a superbly-taken goal gave the team brief hope of a comeback.
Team: - Sam Hart, Patrick, Max, William, Kane, Joel, Somerset
