Hitchin Hurricanes 1 Bassingbourn U10 0
Royston Crow League Cup Quarter Final, 3rd April 2011

The Hurricanes booked a semi-final slot and a trip to Baldock Knights after a narrow but deserved victory over a committed and well-organised Bassingbourn side.

The opening exchanges were even as Bassingbourn made a fast start and put pressure on the Hitchin defence but the Hurricanes gradually established control and dominated possession and territory for the rest of the half. Despite some great approach play, the boys just couldn’t quite find the finishing touch – Somerset went closest when after superbly turning his marker, his neat finish rolled just the wrong side of the post. Bassingbourn defended magnificently and their keeper was particularly secure and impressive.

The second half followed a similar pattern. Somerset went agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock again and Kane flashed a header just over the bar from an accurate Joel corner. Joel then hit the post and saw his follow-up shot cleared off the line before he finally broke the deadlock with 8 minutes to go. Great work from Kane to win possession and find Joel on the right wing – he skipped inside a defender and drove a strong shot that beat the Bassingbourn keeper at his near post. The visitors launched a late comeback but Max, Kai and Sam held firm and Hitchin could have added to their winning margin as the game became stretched.

Overall, a thoroughly deserved victory – the boys stuck to the task and eventually broke down a determined defence. Sam had a quiet game but was secure when called upon. Patrick, Max and Kai were superb in defence – this was the third clean sheet in the three Cup games this season. Kane and Will were dynamic in midfield and Somerset and Joel’s movement and link-up play was excellent.

Man of the match: - Max – a rock in defence – didn’t miss a tackle, header or interception all game.
