Hitchin Hurricanes 1 Baldock Templars 2
Royston Crow League A, 16th January 2011

The Hurricanes were pipped by the Templars after another close and competitive game. Both teams coped well with the muddy pitch and it was a contest of high skill, fast pace and commitment between these two evenly-matched teams.

Hitchin used the slope to good effect in the first half and put Baldock under a lot of pressure. Their best chances came from a couple of goalmouth scrambles – but some committed Baldock defending meant we couldn’t quite force the ball over the line. With some fast and skilful forwards Baldock always looked dangerous and Sam, Max and Patrick had to be alert to ensure we didn’t concede.

The second half followed a similar pattern although Baldock had the lion’s-share of possession and Sam made some great saves to keep the score level. At the other end, Joel went closest for Hitchin, clipping the outside of the post after a surging run into the box from the right-wing.

With under ten minutes left, it looked like the match might be heading for 0-0, that rarest of scorelines in junior football. Then, after Sam tipped over a long-range free-kick, from the resulting corner, the ball was cleared but from the rebound, a shot from the edge of the box whizzed just inside the left-hand post. Hitchin pushed for an equaliser but conceded a second with two minutes to go. Still the boys kept going forward and in the last minute, Will halved the deficit with a neat turn and shot from just inside the box.

Both teams should be very proud of their contribution to another fantastically entertaining match.
