Hitchin Hornets 3 Baldock Crusaders 1
Royston Crow League, 28th March 2009

Another great win for the Hornets – a fantastic first half display put them firmly in the driving seat and they cruised to a win in the second half. The foundation of the win was yet again a strong defence. Kane had a busy game and was as brave and reliable as always. Jonathan was again impressive and also indestructible…. three times he lay injured after hefty challenges and three times he came bouncing back. Olly had another super game, the highlight being two goal-line clearances in the space of about 5 seconds midway through the first half. Kai and Vinay used the ball well on the wings, giving the team width and a useful outlet. James and Somerset linked well to spearhead the attack, dropping deep to support, when necessary.

Somerset put Hitchin 1-0 up after five minutes, with a neat finish from a run and cross by Kai. Somerset added his and Hitchin’s second a minute later with a superb individual goal. Collecting the ball on the right wing with his back to goal, he skilfully spun around his marker, raced into the penalty area and beat the keeper with ease. Baldock pulled one back, with a scrappy goal but Hitchin restored their 2 goal advantage with a first goal of the season for Kai. After coming agonisingly close to scoring in recent weeks, he capitalised on a goalmouth scramble to skilfully steer the ball into the left-hand corner through a crowded penalty area. The smile on his face said it all!

The second half was less action-packed and, apart from a few scares, the Hornets cruised to another notable win.

Team: Kane, Jonathan, Oliver, Kai, Vinay, Sam Hen, James, Somerset
