A bright, chilly morning greeted a road trip to Ashwell and, after a tight and entertaining contest, the boys were unfortunate not to return to Hitchin with an away win.
Hitchin spent most of the first half on the back foot as Ashwell made a good start. Sam Henshaw had another excellent game in goal and made some crucial stops including one where he palmed a strong shot onto the post. Ashwell were also unlucky when a free-kick from outside the box clipped the Hitchin cross-bar. Hitchin enjoyed a lot of possession with James, Joel and William busy and competitive, but struggled to create many clear-cut chances in a goalless first half.
The second half was an open, end-to-end contest, both teams attacking in search of a breakthrough. Vinay and Kane were full of energy and running and Vinay took a pass from Patrick to set up Sam Hartnack who put Hitchin in front early in the half, a low shot from the right hand angle of the penalty area beating the Ashwell goalkeeper at his near-post. Ashwell equalised with five minutes to go. After a goalmouth melee the ball was bundled across the line. Ashwell and their supporters claimed the goal and the referee signalled it had crossed the line.
As the clock ticked down, both teams attacked looking for the winner and Hitchin went closest when Sam Hartnack’s fee-kick flew inches over the cross-bar. Ashwell U7 1 Hitchin U7 1
