A superb performance from the Hurricanes produced easily their best result of the season so far - a dominant win over an outclassed Welwyn team.
Right from the kick-off, the boys looked sharp and hungry. Patrick and Stephen were alert and diligent in defence. Kane buzzed around the midfield with his usual high energy and the front three of Ryan, Somerset and Joel looked dangerous in every attack. It was no surprise when Hitchin took the lead after five minutes – Joel pounced on a loose clearance from the Welwyn keeper and finished clinically. Two minutes later Joel made it 2-0 with a long-range shot eluding the keeper’s dive.
Keeper Sam Hen kept the two-goal lead intact with a superb stop from a close-range Welwyn shot. Hitchin quickly broke from the resulting clearance and after a good run and shot from Kane was parried, Ryan reacted quickly to net the rebound for his first goal of the season. Within minutes, he added a second. In the move of the match, Patrick made a good tackle on the left touchline and passed infield to Somerset. Somerset eluded two challenges before releasing a clever pass to Ryan who made it four with a strong shot.
With Hitchin 4-0 up at half time, the win was secured but Welwyn came out strongly for the second half and made it a more even contest. Hitchin managed to repel their attacks comfortably and extended their lead when Joel crashed home an unstoppable free kick from the left hand edge of the box to make it 5 and complete his hat-trick. Just before the final whistle it was 6-0, when Joel’s shot from just inside the box was diverted into the net by a Welwyn defender.
Overall, an excellent performance and result. With two wins out of two, eight goals and two clean-sheets, the Hurricanes are building momentum ahead of the run of games leading up to Christmas.
