Hitchin Hurricanes 1 BSCFC Town 0
Royston Crow League, 13 September 2008

A one-nil score line with the game settled by an own-goal sounds, on paper, a very narrow win. This game was anything but. The Hurricanes were on top throughout and could, and should, have won by four or five.

The boys started strongly and dominated possession. William had a fantastic first half. He was full of energy and showed very good awareness - his link-up play with Jonathan and Sam was sharp and fast and, time and again sliced through the Stortford defence. Despite countless chances, the ball stubbornly refused to cross the line. The deadlock was broken midway through the first half when a cross shot from William was diverted into the net by an unfortunate Stortford defender. A 1-0 half-time score line was the least the boys deserved.

After a cracking first half William went in goal and Ryan supported Sam in attack. Samuel replaced Jonathan in midfield and the onslaught on the Bishops Stortford goal continued. Ryan hit the bar with a shot and Sam hit the woodwork three times in the second half alone – on any other day, he could have had a hat trick, at least.

Max, Stephen and defensive shield Oliver coped comfortably with the sporadic Stortford attacks. The only scare came with two minutes to go when a Stortford striker was clear. William was very alert and raced out to block the shot and Stephen and Max smuggled the ball to safety.

It would have been a total injustice if the boys had gained anything other than a win and they hung on for a well deserved win. William was man-of-the-match, closely followed by Sam and Ryan. Well-done Hurricanes on your first win of the season!
